Is Rihanna Redefining Maternity Fashion?
Rihanna - the true definition of a woman who doesn’t conform to societal standards.
If anyone has the power to redefine fashion, it is Rihanna.
Rihanna, the singer and billionaire entrepreneur, confirmed pregnancy rumors with her boyfriend ASAP Rocky in January 2022. This will be the couple’s first child together. Since the announcement, Rihanna has been seen numerous times proudly rocking her baby bump in bold and revealing clothing. Usually, the bump is bare and accessorized— often the star of the entire look.
From being seen in just a leather tie-up top under a fur coat on her Instagram to choosing to wear a lace crop top and trousers at Gucci’s ready-to-wear fashion show, she has been putting the internet in a frenzy. “How could she be pregnant wearing that?!”
The hate is real and expected, but the liberating inspiration amongst young mothers is more real. And that is no shocker. The 34-year old fashion icon is known to revolutionize the way women around the world think about both beauty and fashion. Remember the ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ era in 2007 when Rihanna made the bob her signature style and suddenly salons were booked up with the “RiRi Cut”? What about in 2010 when you couldn’t go a day without seeing someone rocking bold red hair exactly like the singer? Point proven.
Pregnant influencer, Stephany Gomez, told the New York Post that “[Rihanna] has created a movement that shows the world women can still look and feel sexy during pregnancy… She inspires me to show off my body, confidently... Instead of trying to cover my belly up, I make it look hot.” Gomez is six months pregnant with her first child.
Rihanna is reminding women that pregnancy is amazing and the looks do not have to be boring. Expecting mothers have the right to be and feel sexy. The bump is the highlight, so why not embrace it?
"Right now, being pregnant, some days you just feel like, 'Ugh, I just want to lay here on this couch all day.' But when you put on a little face and a little lipstick, you transform," Rihanna shared with PEOPLE.
"You put some clothes on, and it's like, when you look good, you feel good," Rihanna continued. "I've heard that for a very long time, but it's true. It really can get you up off that couch and make you feel like a bad bitch."
